There are two basic kinds of blades: Fixed and Folding. The folding blade offers a measure of both safety and compact size when storing. A fixed blade requires a sturdy sheath for storage and safety.

The Bowie Knife is designed for heavy-duty all around use in the campground or field. Its heavy blade is available in lengths up to and including 20”. There are two key considerations when choosing the correct size. The blade length and the handle length are the most important considerations. The hunting knife is usually preferred to be 4 1/2 “ or less. If you prefer a longer length for specific uses, a 5” blade may give you a tool that will perform several tasks. Blade materials are another consideration. Stainless steel to avoid rust is a popular choice. Many manufactures now use Carbon steel because it makes sharpening easier, but these require more care. To enhance hardness, a titanium nitride coating is often added for protection and to help keep the working edge sharp. A collectible knife often has detailed engraving or other specific enhancements to make it distinctive as a collectible knife.

The handle should have a grip that exceeds the width of your hand by approximately ¼” on either side for both comfort and safety. Handle materials come a wide selection of styles and designs. For a fixed blade, be sure the tang of the blade extends fully through the handle for maximum strength. A collectible knife is often made with exotic a handle carved from antler or bone to enhance beauty and value.

A collectible knife is often a special edition or anniversary edition from a specific manufacture. Collector sets are usually only available for a limited time and in limited quantities. Their values are rated by the number made available, age, condition and popularity with collectors.
